House of the Palm
In Motril stands the Casa de la Palma, an emblematic building whose history dates back to the 16th century, when it was an old sugar factory and mill in one of the main sugarcane production centers of the region.
Over the centuries, it changed owners and was gradually expanded, gaining a stately character with its large central courtyard and the clock that crowns its façade.
After its restoration, this historic building has become a vibrant cultural center that hosts the Municipal Public Library, the Historical Archive, the UNED campus, as well as exhibitions and cultural activities.
Within its walls is also the Pre-industrial Sugarcane Museum, where visitors can learn how this industry shaped the identity and development of Motril.
Visiting Casa de la Palma means discovering a witness to the city’s sugar-producing past, a place where history, culture, and memory come together.
