Nuestra Señora del Pilar Sugar Factory - Museum

Scroll

In Motril, the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Sugar Factory is one of the most emblematic landmarks of the city’s industrial heritage.

Opened in 1883, this former sugar factory was the economic engine of the Costa Tropical for more than a century and a witness to the industrial boom linked to sugar cane cultivation.

After its closure in 1984, the complex underwent an important restoration and museum project aimed at preserving its history and transforming it into the Industrial Sugar Museum, where the manufacturing process and the lives of the people who worked there are explained.

Today, visitors can explore some of its restored spaces, discover original machinery from the period, and understand how sugar shaped the identity and social development of Motril.

Visiting the Pilar Factory is a journey to the heart of Andalusia’s sugar industrialization and a way to discover an essential chapter of local history.

Motril. Industrial heritage that still beats.
