Church of El Carmen
In Motril, the Church of El Carmen is a jewel of the local heritage.
It was built in the 17th century and was originally dedicated to Saint Roch, chosen as the protector of the city after the epidemic of 1583.
In the 18th century, the temple changed its dedication to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, becoming an important place of devotion and tradition in Motril.
In a proto-Baroque style, it stands out for its single nave, its dome above the main chapel, and a richly decorated camarín adorned with Baroque plasterwork.
Visiting it means discovering an essential part of Motril’s history, where art, memory, and spirituality remain alive.
