Church of the Incarnation

Scroll

In the heart of Motril stands the Major Church of the Incarnation, one of the oldest and most emblematic monuments in the city. It was built between 1510 and 1514 on the remains of the former Alixara mosque after the Christian conquest, and it features a mixture of architectural styles that reflect its historical evolution: Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

With the appearance of a fortress, this temple has not only been a place of worship but also a refuge and a witness to centuries of local history. Its interior houses important works of art and is the headquarters of several brotherhoods that participate in Motril’s renowned Holy Week.

Visiting the Major Church of the Incarnation means discovering the living history of Motril, where art, tradition, and faith come together in a monument that remains open to visitors.

Motril. Heritage that endures.
